Maurienne

The Maurienne is the valley of the Arc river in Savoy, south-eastern France, running from the Alpine passes near Mont Cenis down to the Isère. In antiquity it was home to the Medulli. In the early eleventh century it was one of the core holdings of Humbert White-Hands, founder of the House of Savoy, and its route over the Mont Cenis pass linked France and Italy.
