Medulli

300 BCE – 14 BCE (approx.)

Alpine people of the Maurienne valley, among the mountain peoples finally subdued by Augustus.

Origins

Strabo places the Medulli on the highest mountains above the confluence of the Isère and the Rhône, and they are generally located in the Maurienne, the valley of the Arc in Savoy. They controlled routes towards the passes into Italy.

Rule and society

Almost nothing is known of their society beyond their mountain economy of herding and pass trade. They appear among the communities of the Cottian Alps.

Decline and legacy

Their name is listed among the Alpine peoples conquered by Augustus on the Tropaeum Alpium at La Turbie, erected in 7 to 6 BCE. Their land was divided between the Cottian Alps and neighbouring districts.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
