Meshchera

The Meshchera were a Finnic people of the forests along the middle Oka river in central Russia, mentioned in medieval Russian sources. Their lands came under Ryazan and Moscow, and they were gradually absorbed by Russian settlers and by the Tatars of the Qasim Khanate, centred on the former Gorodets Meshchersky. The marshy Meshchera Lowlands east of Moscow still bear their name.
