Mgungundlovu

1829–1838 · 19th century · Also known as uMgungundlovu

Mgungundlovu was the royal capital of the Zulu king Dingane, built around 1829 in the Emakhosini valley in KwaZulu-Natal. In February 1838 the Voortrekker leader Piet Retief and his party were killed there on Dingane's orders. Dingane burned the capital after his defeat at Blood River in December 1838; its site is now a heritage site.
