Mingyi Nyo

1459–1530 · 16th century

Mingyi Nyo was the founder of the Toungoo dynasty of Burma, ruler of the small principality of Toungoo on the Sittaung river from 1485. As the kingdom of Ava weakened, he declared independence in 1510 and built Toungoo into a refuge for Burmans fleeing Shan raids in the north. His son Tabinshwehti and Tabinshwehti's brother-in-law Bayinnaung built on this base to create the First Toungoo Empire.
