Nanda Bayin

1535–1600 · 16th century

Nanda Bayin was king of the First Toungoo Empire of Burma from 1581 to 1599, the son and successor of Bayinnaung. He inherited the largest empire in the history of mainland Southeast Asia but faced revolts, and his repeated failed campaigns against Siam under Naresuan, which won its independence in 1584, exhausted the country. In 1599 the forces of Toungoo and Arakan took his capital Pegu, and he was killed in 1600.
