Mount Carmel

Mount Carmel is a coastal mountain range in northern Israel, rising above the city of Haifa and the Mediterranean. Long held sacred, it is linked in the Hebrew Bible with the prophet Elijah. Latin hermits settled there in the 12th century, and the Carmelite order of friars took shape among them in the early 13th century.
