Mount Hiei
Mount Hiei is a mountain of 848 metres on the border of Kyoto and Shiga prefectures in Japan, overlooking Kyoto and Lake Biwa. From the late 8th century it was the seat of the great Tendai monastery of Enryaku-ji, regarded as the guardian of the capital against evil from the north-east. The military power of its monks ended when Oda Nobunaga destroyed the monastery in 1571.
