Mount Lyell
Mount Lyell is a mountain in the West Coast Range of Tasmania, near Queenstown. Gold was found there in the 1880s, and from the 1890s the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company worked its huge copper deposits, smelting the ore on site. Mining made Queenstown a boom town but stripped the surrounding hills of vegetation, and copper was mined there until 2014.
