Muirchertach Ó Briain (d. 1343)
Muirchertach Ó Briain was king of Thomond, in north Munster, from 1317 to 1343. He won the throne in a civil war among the O'Briens, and in 1318 his side destroyed the army of the Anglo-Norman lord Richard de Clare at Dysert O'Dea, ending Norman attempts to conquer Thomond. Gaelic rule west of the Shannon survived for more than two centuries afterwards.
