Muradid dynasty

1613–1702 · 17th century

The Muradid dynasty ruled Tunisia as hereditary beys under Ottoman suzerainty from 1613 to 1702. Founded by Murad Bey, a Corsican-born mamluk, it grew stronger under Hammuda Pasha Bey and eclipsed the deys of Tunis. Succession wars within the family from 1675 and invasions from Algiers weakened it; the last Muradid bey was killed in 1702, and in 1705 Husayn ibn Ali founded the Husainid dynasty.
