Murano

Murano is a group of islands in the Venetian lagoon, about 1.5 kilometres north of Venice. In 1291 the republic ordered glassmakers to move their furnaces there, partly to reduce the risk of fire in the city, and Murano became the centre of Venetian glass-making, famous for its crystal glass, mirrors and coloured glass. Its glassworkers were long forbidden to leave the republic.
