Murata Seifū

1783–1855 · 19th century · Also known as Murata Seifu

Murata Seifū (1783–1855) was a samurai official of the Chōshū domain who led its Tenpō-era reforms from 1838. He reduced the domain's heavy debts, cut spending and encouraged and regulated the production of paper, salt and wax, while developing trade through the port of Shimonoseki. His reforms strengthened Chōshū's finances ahead of its leading role in the Meiji Restoration.
