Muscovy Company

1555 · 16th century · Also known as Russia Company

The Muscovy Company was an English trading company chartered in 1555 after Richard Chancellor's voyage to the White Sea opened direct contact with the court of Ivan IV. One of the first major joint-stock companies, it held a monopoly of English trade with Russia, enjoyed privileges there, and sponsored voyages in search of a north-east passage and whaling at Spitsbergen. It lost its Russian privileges in 1649.
