Mwamba (Bemba title)

Mwamba is the title of one of the senior chiefs of the Bemba of north-eastern Zambia, who rules a large territory next to that of the Chitimukulu, the paramount. Holders of the Mwamba title were among the most powerful figures in the 19th-century Bemba state and often succeeded to the paramountcy. The death of Mwamba in 1898 opened the way for British South Africa Company rule.
