Nanren

Nanren, meaning southerners, was the term for the former subjects of the Southern Song in the ethnic hierarchy of the Yuan Dynasty. They formed the lowest of four tiers, below the Mongols, the Semu of Central and Western Asia, and the northern Chinese Hanren. The classification limited their access to office and legal protection.
