National Action Party

1939–present · 20th century · Also known as PAN

The National Action Party (PAN) is a conservative Mexican political party founded in 1939 by Manuel Gómez Morín, drawing on Catholic and business opposition to the ruling party. For decades a minor opposition, it won its first state governorship in 1989 and the presidency in 2000 with Vicente Fox, ending 71 years of PRI rule. Felipe Calderón held the presidency for it from 2006 to 2012.
