Ngwane III

d. c. 1780 · 18th century

Ngwane III was a chief of the Dlamini clan who, according to Swazi tradition, led his people around 1745 to settle near the lower Pongola river in what is now southern Eswatini, founding the nucleus of the Swazi Kingdom. The Swazi still call their country kaNgwane, the land of Ngwane, after him, and his successors built on this base to create a kingdom.
