Norodom of Cambodia

1834–1904 · 19th century · Also known as King Norodom, Norodom I

Norodom was King of Cambodia from 1860 to 1904. Under pressure from Siam and Vietnam, he accepted a French protectorate in 1863, and a convention imposed in 1884 handed most real power to French officials. His reign established the arrangement in which the Cambodian monarchy survived under French rule, and later kings, including Norodom Sihanouk, descended from him.
