French protectorate of Cambodia

1863 CE – 1953 CE · capital Phnom Penh

Cambodia under French protection for ninety years, which saved the kingdom from partition by Siam and Vietnam but subordinated its monarchy to colonial rule.

Origins

In 1863 King Norodom, weakened by Siamese overlordship and internal rivals, signed a treaty with France accepting a protectorate, partly to escape Siamese pressure. A convention in 1884 forced on him much tighter French control, provoking a rebellion from 1885 to 1887.

Rule and society

French résidents controlled finance, taxation and administration, while the king kept ritual authority. The capital was moved to Phnom Penh, which France rebuilt. Rubber plantations and rice exports grew, but most Cambodians remained farmers, and Vietnamese clerks staffed much of the administration. In 1907 France obtained Battambang and Siem Reap, with Angkor, from Siam. Cambodia became part of French Indochina in 1887.

Decline and legacy

Japan's coup of March 1945 allowed King Norodom Sihanouk to proclaim the Kingdom of Kampuchea, but France returned that autumn. Sihanouk's 'royal crusade' for independence succeeded in November 1953, creating the Kingdom of Cambodia.
