Odwira festival

Also known as Odwira

The Odwira is an annual festival of several Akan states of Ghana, among them Asante and Akuapem, held at the time of the yam harvest. It purifies the community and the royal ancestral stools, renews the bond between the ruler and his people, and is marked by rites, gatherings of chiefs and the first eating of new yams. In Asante, tradition credits its founding to the priest Okomfo Anokye.
