Old Malay
Old Malay is the earliest attested form of the Malay language, known from inscriptions in Sumatra and nearby regions. The Kedukan Bukit inscription of 682 CE, found near Palembang, is the oldest surviving example. Promoted as an administrative and commercial lingua franca by the Srivijaya Empire, it became the foundation of the Malay language.
