Operation Gomorrah

1943 · 20th century · Part of the Second World War

Operation Gomorrah was a series of British and American air raids on Hamburg in late July and early August 1943. On the night of 27–28 July, hot, dry weather and concentrated bombing created a firestorm that devastated eastern districts of the city. Around 35,000 people were killed and hundreds of thousands fled, making it one of the deadliest air attacks of the Second World War.
