Ortenau
The Ortenau is a region of Baden in south-western Germany, lying between the Rhine and the western slopes of the Black Forest, with Offenburg as its main town. In the Middle Ages it was divided among the bishops of Strasbourg, local lords and small imperial cities, while the emperors repeatedly pledged their bailiwick there to neighbouring princes. It passed to Baden in the Napoleonic era, and its name survives in the Ortenaukreis district.
