Ostpolitik

1969–1974 · 20th century · Also known as Neue Ostpolitik

Ostpolitik was the policy of reconciliation with the Soviet Union, Poland, East Germany and Czechoslovakia pursued by Willy Brandt as West German foreign minister and then chancellor from 1969. Through the treaties of Moscow and Warsaw in 1970 and the Basic Treaty of 1972 with East Germany, West Germany accepted the post-war borders in practice. Brandt received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971.
