Otto II, Duke of Bavaria

1206–1253 · 13th century · Also known as Otto the Illustrious

Otto II, called the Illustrious, was a Wittelsbach Duke of Bavaria from 1231 to 1253 and, through his marriage to Agnes of the Palatinate, Count Palatine of the Rhine from 1228. He supported the Hohenstaufen emperors against the papacy and was excommunicated. On his death his sons Louis II and Henry XIII divided the duchy in 1255, the first of many Wittelsbach partitions.
