Oxib Keh

d. 1524 · 16th century

Oxib Keh was the ajpop, or principal king, of the K'iche' kingdom in the Guatemalan highlands when the Spanish arrived. After Pedro de Alvarado defeated the K'iche' near Quetzaltenango in 1524, Oxib Keh and his co-ruler Beleheb Tz'i received the Spaniards at their capital, Q'umarkaj. Accusing them of plotting against him, Alvarado had both kings burnt and the city destroyed.
