Popol Vuh

1550s · 16th century

The Popol Vuh, 'Council Book', is the sacred narrative of the K'iche' Maya of Guatemala. Written in K'iche' in the Latin alphabet by anonymous nobles in the 1550s, it recounts the creation of the world, the exploits of the Hero Twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque, and the history of the K'iche' lineages. It survives in a copy made by the Dominican friar Francisco Ximénez around 1701.
