Paderborn
Paderborn is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, at the springs of the Pader. Charlemagne held assemblies there from 777 and met Pope Leo III there in 799, and it became the seat of a bishopric, later a prince-bishopric that lasted until 1802. Its cathedral and the remains of its Carolingian palace recall this history, and it is home to a university founded in 1972.
