Padmavat

1540 · 16th century

Padmavat is an epic poem in Awadhi by the Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi, completed in 1540. It tells how Ratansen, king of Chittor, won the Sinhalese princess Padmavati and how Alauddin Khalji besieged Chittor to possess her, ending with the king's death and the queen's self-immolation. Read by Jayasi as a Sufi allegory of the soul, it became the source of the Rajput legend of Padmini.
