Padmasambhava

8th century · 8th century · Also known as Guru Rinpoche

Padmasambhava was an Indian tantric master who, according to Tibetan tradition, was invited to Tibet by the emperor Trisong Detsen in the eighth century, subdued the local spirits hostile to Buddhism and helped found Samye monastery. Revered as Guru Rinpoche, the "precious teacher", he is regarded as the founder of the Nyingma school, though much of his story comes from later sources.
