Trisong Detsen

742–c. 800 · 8th century

Trisong Detsen was emperor of Tibet from 755 to about 797, the second of the three great 'religious kings' of the Tibetan Empire. His armies briefly took the Tang capital Chang'an in 763 and extended Tibetan power along the Silk Road. He invited the Indian teachers Shantarakshita and Padmasambhava, founded Samye, Tibet's first Buddhist monastery, around 779, and made Buddhism the state religion.
