Padri War
The Padri War was a conflict in West Sumatra from 1803 to 1837. It began as a struggle between the Padri, Islamic reformers influenced by Wahhabism, and the Minangkabau nobility who upheld customary law; from 1821 the Dutch intervened on the side of the nobles. Led by Tuanku Imam Bonjol, the Padri held out until the fall of Bonjol in 1837, after which the highlands came under Dutch rule.
