Patronato real
The Patronato real, or royal patronage, was the set of rights granted by the papacy to the Spanish crown over the Church in its overseas territories. It allowed the crown to appoint bishops and clergy in the colonies. This made the Church an arm of colonial governance in the Spanish Empire, responsible for conversion, education and social control.
