Patroon

1629 · 17th century · Also known as Patroonship

A patroon was a landholder in New Netherland granted a large estate, a patroonship, by the Dutch West India Company under its Charter of Freedoms and Exemptions of 1629, in return for settling fifty adults there within four years. Patroons held manorial rights over their tenants, including courts. Most patroonships failed, but Rensselaerswyck, founded by Kiliaen van Rensselaer, prospered.
