Person
Pedro de Peralta
Pedro de Peralta was a Spanish colonial official who served as governor of New Mexico from 1610 to 1614. On royal orders he moved the capital of the colony from San Gabriel to a new site and founded the town of Santa Fe around 1610. His quarrels with the Franciscans over authority and Indian labour led to his arrest and imprisonment by the friars before he was cleared by the authorities in Mexico City.
