Pedro Teixeira
Pedro Teixeira (c. 1587–1641) was a Portuguese explorer and soldier in Brazil. In 1637–1639 he led an expedition of some 2,000 people in canoes up the Amazon from Belém to Quito and back, the first European journey up the whole river. On the return he claimed land far to the west for Portugal, a claim later used to justify Portuguese control of most of the Amazon basin.
