António Vieira
António Vieira (1608–1697) was a Portuguese Jesuit missionary, diplomat and preacher, considered a master of classical Portuguese prose. Raised in Bahia, he served King John IV as an adviser and envoy after 1640, and from 1653 led the Jesuit missions in Maranhão and Grão-Pará, where he campaigned against the enslavement of indigenous people until the settlers expelled the Jesuits in 1661. He was later tried by the Inquisition.
