Pedubast I

9th century BCE · 9th century BCE

Pedubast I was a king of Egypt in the late 9th century BCE, usually counted as the founder of the Twenty-third Dynasty. Around 837 BCE, amid conflict within the Twenty-second Dynasty, he proclaimed himself king and was recognised at Thebes, rivalling Takelot II and his son, the High Priest Osorkon. His rise marked the splitting of Egypt among several Libyan royal lines.
