Perpetual Maritime Truce

1853 · 19th century · Also known as Treaty of Maritime Peace in Perpetuity

The Perpetual Maritime Truce was an agreement of 1853 between Britain and the rulers of the coast now forming the United Arab Emirates, forbidding all hostilities at sea between them. It made permanent a series of seasonal truces begun in 1835 and gave Britain the role of enforcing peace at sea. The coast became known as the Trucial Coast and its sheikhdoms as the Trucial States.
