Pharnavaz I of Iberia

r. c. 300 BCE · 4th century BCE

Pharnavaz I was the first king of Iberia, or Kartli, in eastern Georgia, according to the medieval Georgian chronicles, which place him around 300 BCE. They credit him with uniting the country after the fall of the Achaemenid Empire, organising it into provinces under eristavis and creating the Georgian script, a claim modern scholars reject. His historicity is uncertain, but he became a founding figure of Georgian kingship.
