Philip I, Count of Katzenelnbogen

1402–1479 · 15th century · Also known as Philip the Elder of Katzenelnbogen

Philip the Elder (1402–1479) was the last Count of Katzenelnbogen, ruling one of the richest counties of the Rhineland through its tolls at Rheinfels and Burg Katz. He outlived his son, so on his death the county passed to his daughter Anna's husband, Landgrave Henry III of Hesse, greatly enriching the Hessian state.
