John IV, Count of Katzenelnbogen
John IV (died 1444) was Count of Katzenelnbogen, a Rhineland county whose rulers drew great wealth from Rhine tolls. An account from his cellar at Rüsselsheim dated 1435, recording the purchase of Riesling vines, is the earliest known written mention of the grape. He was succeeded by his son Philip the Elder, the last count.
