Phoebidas

fl. 382 BCE · 4th century BCE

Phoebidas was a Spartan commander who in 382 BCE, while leading troops north against Olynthus, seized the Cadmea, the citadel of Thebes, with the help of a pro-Spartan Theban faction. Sparta fined him but kept the garrison, an act widely condemned in Greece. Theban exiles freed the city in 379 BCE, and Phoebidas was later killed in a skirmish near Thespiae while commanding the Spartan garrison there.
