Person
Pope Cornelius
Cornelius was bishop of Rome from 251 until his death in exile at Centumcellae in 253, and is venerated as a saint and martyr. His election was opposed by Novatian, who led a rigorist schism over the readmission of Christians who had lapsed during the Decian persecution. He is commemorated together with his ally Cyprian of Carthage, and relics of his were brought to Kornelimünster near Aachen in the 9th century.
