Preliminary Peace Convention

1828 · 19th century · Also known as Treaty of Montevideo (1828) · Part of the Cisplatine War

The Preliminary Peace Convention was the agreement signed in Rio de Janeiro on 27 August 1828 by the Empire of Brazil and the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata, under British mediation, that ended the Cisplatine War. Both sides gave up their claims to the disputed Banda Oriental, which became an independent state. The settlement led to the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, whose first constitution was adopted in 1830.
