Principate
The Principate is the term for the first period of the Roman Empire, from Augustus in 27 BCE until the late third century CE. Emperors ruled as princeps, maintaining the outward forms of republican institutions. It gave way to a more openly autocratic system under Diocletian, known as the Dominate.
