Princeps
Princeps, meaning first citizen, was the title adopted by Augustus to describe his position after the end of the Roman Republic. By avoiding the title of king, he maintained the appearance of republican government while holding supreme power. The term gave its name to the Principate, the early form of rule in the Roman Empire.
