Province Wellesley

1800 · 19th century · Also known as Seberang Perai

Province Wellesley, now Seberang Perai, is the mainland part of the Malaysian state of Penang, a strip of coast facing Penang island. The Sultan of Kedah ceded it to the British East India Company in 1800, and it was named after Richard Wellesley, governor-general of India. It gave the colony control of the coast opposite George Town and later formed part of the Straits Settlements.
