Qansuh al-Ghawri was the penultimate Mamluk sultan of Egypt and Syria, reigning from 1501 to 1516. He built a fleet to fight the Portuguese in the Indian Ocean, which was defeated at the Battle of Diu in 1509, and left a large mosque and mausoleum complex in Cairo. He was killed at the Battle of Marj Dabiq against the Ottomans in 1516, which opened Syria and then Egypt to Selim I.
